Free as a bird with NIA

I love my body for its mobility and my mind for its creativity. That's what I came away with after a workshop with NIA master, Kathy Wolstenholme

Sugar Dance Studios hosted this dynamic woman for a workshop entitled 'juice'. What a delicious word that is and what a great way to spend an hour and a half! I almost didn't go...i'd had a busy day (you know the usual lame excuse)...but as the owner of the studio I wanted to show my support. It always amazes me how exercise lifts my spirits and washes away negative clouds of tension and stress. We all arrived carrying the burdens of the day in our bodies but left feeling energized and uplifted!

Kathy is originally from the USA and was instrumental in bringing NIA out to South Africa. She now lives in Cape Town and is touring the country promoting the style and sharing her passion with lucky people like me.

According to Kathy, I am walking battery pack sustained and enhanced by food, water, air & MOVEMENT! In the same way that being driven, recharges a car battery, MOVEMENT recharges my battery. I let go of my insecurities and let the music sing to me, playing its rhythms through my 13 joints. I stretched out my limbs and shook about, I even rolled around on the floor and shouted out loud! It was a brilliant experience to be so free and unconfined.

North Coast Big 5 Competition

Ballito is a "small town" by most standards. We have a couple of local newspapers and big billboards, but mostly word of mouth is your greatest hope of successful advertising. It was a refreshing change when Jess from Sugar Rush invited me to be a part of the North Coast Big 5 Competition...at no cost to me. Tuesday the 3rd May saw the inaugural event taking place. A wonderful initiative by Sugar Rush  who really go out of their way to promote businesses in the area. They partnered with the North Coast Courier and Enterprise Ilembe and hosted a great evening out. The catering was done by Et Voila (info@etvoila.co.za) and the samoosas and other snacks were outstanding and traditional Zulu dancers added a Kwa-Zulu Natal touch. 

There were 5 categories...Health & Lifestyle which Sugar Dance entered, Activities, Entertainment, Community and Destinations. Who doesn't want to win? I certainly do not mind winning, especially when the organizers threw in a surprise by announcing that the winners would have a feature on national TV breakfast show Expresso on SABC 3!!! But alas, Sugar Dance was close, but lost out to Fashion Hair Lab.
